How Heimat grows hemp

Know-how, experience and passion: these are the ingredients with which our team in Western Switzerland cultivates first-class hemp flowers. This is the only way to create natural products that are both visually and tastefully convincing, as well as having a high CBD content. This is the basis for the consistently high quality of Heimat products - from pre-rolls to hemp tea.

How is CBD hemp grown?

As in so many areas, hemp cultivation also requires knowledge, experience, time and commitment. And it needs ideal framework conditions.

Hemp grows best in loose, well-drained soil that is rich in organic nutrients. Seedlings and cuttings can be planted in the field when spring soil temperatures are well above freezing, even at night. Hemp plants need adequate moisture and nutrients during their growth cycle. This is where our experts need to be constantly vigilant and keep a constant eye on the plants and their needs, so that the flowering is as abundant as possible.

It is also important to protect the hemp plants from natural pests and diseases. In doing so, we place great emphasis on protecting our plants in a natural way. One of the ways to fight pests naturally without the use of pesticides is to grow companion plants next to hemp that keep pests away naturally.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor?

For generations, hemp was grown outdoors in nature, like any other cultivated plant, until, among other things, legal restrictions drove it into illegality and thus indoors. However, even though CBD hemp can be grown in public again in Switzerland, there are good reasons for indoor cultivation. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages:

Indoor

Hemp grown indoors benefits from a protected environment and therefore constant, controlled conditions. Lights and irrigation systems take over from the sun and rain. This type of cultivation is thus more labour and energy intensive. The big advantage is that long dry or rainy periods, temperature fluctuations or gales do not affect the indoor hemp. Due to these optimal conditions, the harvest of indoor cultivation is usually more productive.

Outdoor

Much of what is done by man or machinery in indoor cultivation is done by nature in the open field. In return, hemp is exposed to the whims of nature. But it also grows the way it has grown for centuries. Similar to wine, the "terroir" of hemp is another interesting factor of outdoor cultivation. This means that the characteristic conditions of the local soil and the regional climate give the hemp an additional individual touch. The same variety of hemp grown in different regions can have a variety of smell and taste nuances. Outdoor cultivation requires a great deal of sensitivity and know-how from our hemp experts in order for the plants to thrive.

The harvest: reward for hard work

While indoor growing can be harvested several times a year, in the wild the plant follows the cycle of the seasons. At the end of a long growing season, hemp plants are harvested in autumn, when the cannabinoid content of the flowers has reached its peak. The hemp flowers are carefully harvested by hand and then air dried. The drying process usually takes at least 16 weeks. By then, the sticky resin that contains the goodness of the hemp plant (such as the terpenes and cannabinoids) has hardened.

And then the time has finally come: a wide range of high-quality CBD products is created from the hemp flowers in the Heimat factory in eastern Switzerland.
